Day Trip to Antwerp and Ghent
Day Trip to Antwerp and Ghent
We'll meet outside Brussels Central Station at 8:30 and set off on our bus ride towards the Flanders region, in the north of Belgium. Before leaving the capital we'll make a short stop to admire the famous Atomium, a fascinating structure built for the 1958 Brussels World Expo that is now a landmark of the country. Do you want to find out how it was built?!
Then we'll make our way to the historic centre of Antwerp. As we stroll through its beautiful monumental area on the banks of the River Scheldt we'll discover why the Spaniards called this city "the city of the sinjoren" (lords), and we'll be able to see some Hispanic legacy in the magnificent Antwerp City Hall, decorated with the coat of arms of Philip II. We'll also pass by other iconic places such as the popular Meir shopping street and Steen castle.
At the end of the guided tour of Antwerp, you'll have around an hour and a half of free time to have lunch and visit some more of the city's monuments. We recommend visiting the Cathedral of Our Lady, where you'll find a stunning collection of paintings by the Flemish Baroque artist Rubens.
At the arranged time, we'll meet up again and set off on the second part of our trip to Ghent, the birthplace of Charles V. On our walking tour through the old town of Ghent we'll pass by the historic centre made up of the Saint-Nicholas Church, Belfry, and Saint Bavo Cathedral. And let's not forget the beautiful Graslei: a picturesque quay on the banks of the River Lys, where we'll see traditional Flemish houses and architecture.
The last stop will be at Gravensteen, the Castle of the Counts of Flanders. Here, you'll have an hour's free time to walk around the old town area. At the end of the day trip, we'll take you back to Brussels, arriving around 6:30 pm.
